Troubled by my past and seeking a new life, I suddenly found myself homeless and meandering through the heart of the Midwest. From New Mexico, I traveled to Michigan to live with my son and his family. With nothing but a bike and a backpack, I made my way following the trails of southwestern Michigan. Two thousand miles away, my ex-husband’s suicide drove me into the winter of my deep despair. Reconsidering the choices I had made in my life, I did what was for me, the unthinkable. I traveled back to my hometown in New England which I had left 21 years earlier. On a quest to find a final resting spot for my ex-husband’s ashes, I found more. In death, he led me back home to face what I had run from in the first place – myself. This is a story of death and rebirth, of despair and hope, the journey of my lifetime.

The Secret Butterfly Trail An Ordinary Life eBook Zushka Biros James Pryke

Picking up where “God Knocked Me Off My Bicycle” left off, author Zushka Biros turns out yet another fabulous memoir with “The Secret Butterfly Trail.” Taken from her journals, she traces her path from the desert of New Mexico to Michigan, and finally back to her childhood home in Massachusetts. Her journey begins as a quest to find herself and begin a new life and an uncertainty of either.

“Like a butterfly hurriedly moving from flower to flower, moving this way and that, what was I searching for?”

Then something happens. While settling into a comfortable small town life in Michigan, she gets the word that her ex-husband Brock had committed suicide.

Cold. Numbness. Disbelief. The world slowed down. The tree branches moved in slow motion in the breeze. Sounds rushed through my ears like wind. I sat outside the clubhouse on a small patio and watched the leaves on the ground, all in magnificent colors rushing around me as if I were in the middle of a cyclone.

I asked her how. She said the words I dreaded all of the 28 years I had known Brock.

“Suicide,” she said.

The author returns to New Mexico for the funeral. Biros’ love for her ex-husband is real and deep. “When it's my time to go, come get me. I want you to be the one to come for me.” she says to him while viewing the casket.

The author describes the Michigan countryside and the small towns—South Lyon, Northville—with details and warmth in a way that had me considering packing my bags and moving there. Her description of her “ordinary” life is equally engaging. I felt like I was a friend living every day with her. But even an ordinary life has its mysteries. For instance. What is the story behind the blue jacket hanging on a tree branch? Why did she leave her hometown? Who was that old fisherman?

Zushka Biros writes with passion and honesty. She writes like a good friend telling you a story, telling you her secrets.

The author drew me into her world with her descriptive prose and vivid imagery throughout her journey of love, loss, sorrow and regret. Her honesty, faith and courage is evident in this gracefully written story.

I'm looking forward to read more from Zuska's Biros.
As I read this story of one woman's recounting of her life I felt a shift from reading 'her' story into an identification with my own story and then transcended into a deepening understanding of the common threads that weave all our stories together in the tapestry of life. By the time I had completed the book I had laughed, shed tears, called out words of warning and advice...then sat back and listened to that wisdom as being spoken to myself. Good job Zushka Biros!
